Genre: Sci-Fi

What would mankind do if it could no longer live on Earth’s surface?

In the amazing graphic novel series of ‘LOW’ writer Rick Remender gives us an amazing detail of the future when the sun is expected to expand and consume our solar system. This event causes Earth’s surface to become so hot that it is no longer safe for humans to live on it. The only way mankind could survive was to build radiation-shielded cities on bottom of ocean (These cities are mostly referred to as Domes throughout the series). These domes also provide the people who live inside of them with oxygen, since they live under water the oxygen can only last for so long. Because the humans days of living on the ocean floor was numbered they sent probes into space in hopes of finding a new planet to live on.

I absolutely love everything every thing about this story, the art design by Greg Tocchini is perfect as it gives great detail of what the people, buildings, and sea creatures under water city of Salus is like. Picture any futuristic city from any classic sci-fi film except that city is under water. The sea creatures that exist are well drawn giving them familiar yet alien like look about them. every page of this entire series is loaded with great art work that is among some of the best that I have seen in a comic book or graphic novel.

The main protagonist Stel Cain was the perfect character for this story, the mother of three children has been dealt a great misfortune in her life. However even with the burden of loosing her daughters she remains optimistic in hopes that she would reunite with them and save humanity from total extinction by locating a habitable planet by using the orginator probes that was sent out into space ten-thousand years ago.

Oxygen is the gold standard in the universe of ‘LOW’ and there are those who are willing to kill, steal and destroy just to obtain it. The higher powers of this under water society has become so cruel that holds on the last bits of oxygen for themselves rather than help the everyday people. The stories villains, heroes and corrupt politicians are not much different from any of todays society and that keeps me drawn to this series. This is amazing story that I strongly recommend to adult readers.
